Emergency Backup Goalie Steals the Game for the Deadpucks 21 February 2022 |
The Deadpucks didn't have the services of future HoF goaltender Gianfranco Tirantelli last Friday night for their tilt against QuaranTeam so they pulled a trick out of the bag of the Carolina Hurricanes almost 2 years to the date by calling up emergency back-up goalie Rachana Tray to fill in the crease for the evening.
Tray, who is closer to 40 than 30, was minding his own business working at the hockey shop when he received a call from captain Michael Ly who informed him of the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to realize his dream of starting a game as a goalie for the Deadpucks in the HNX Beta League.
And what a great story it was; one that you could tell your grandkids for generations down the road.
"The thing that I'll remember the most about this game, other than the victory, is that when the players first saw me on the ice for the first time, how great they were," said a tearful Tray. "They were already on my side, they embraced having me on the ice as a goalie, even though they have never seen me play as a goalie before. It was fantastic."
Behind a brilliant offensive performance from the recently signed Giacomo Iaboni and the return of Laven Sukumaran from LTIR, the Deadpucks and Tray shut down a slumping QuaranTeam 7-4 earning Tray his first career HNX Beta League victory as a goalie.
Iaboni had a hat trick and two assists while weaving in and out of QuaranTeam's defensive players throughout the night often embarrassing them along the way. "That guy is on another level, he's very hard to stop when he's coming up the ice at full speed. Why didn't we sign him?", asked Kien Lee of the QuaranTeam.
In fact, Lee had a first hand account of several goals scored against his team since he tipped in two of them and was the player waiving his stick like a defected magic wand against Iaboni on a late first period goal that gave the Deadpucks a 4-3 lead after one period.
Both teams were off to a shaky start as they traded goals back and forth in the first period. After Iaboni gave the Deadpucks an early 1-0 lead, Kyle Gauvin ripped a blistering shot from the point off a pass from Joseph Leung that sailed right pass Tray, evening the game 1-1. QuaranTeam scored another two goals, one from Gauvin (his second of the night) and another from Leung on a powerplay that put them ahead 3-2, the final time in the game they would see a lead.
The Deadpucks scored five unanswered goals, culminated with Johnathan O'Neil's second goal of the season who was left wide open by Lee in front of QuaranTeam's net after a errant clearing attempt. Jesse Herberman picked up the puck and fired a pass over to O'Neil who one-timed it to the back of the net.
After winning the game, Tray was named the first star and celebrated with his teammates in the dressing room after doing a round of interviews with several networks that may never air.
It's unclear what's in store for Tray after his debut but rumour has it that a Disney movie based on his sudden leap to hockey stardom is in the works.
For now, he will continue to lace up his boots and skates and wait for the next callup, whenever that may be.

QuaranTeam Debuts New Lineup; End Game in Draw Off Crazy Bounce 16 October 2021 | When the ink dried, there was no mistaking the grin on Commish/GM/Coach/Player/Captain, Kien Lee's face after he signed five players to long-term contracts, including preseason holdout and reliable defenseman, Ken Bae.
"I wanted to start playing hockey again, I was putting on too much weight eating chips and watching Squid Games", says Bae.
Along with Bae, QuaranTeam welcomed two highly touted wingman, Chad Dee and Reddit sensation Gary Shew, and the wife and husband super-combo, Ashley Kim and Matthew Tang.
All players passed their physicals and immediately boarded a private jet that arrived hours before the game for their regular season debut.
And oh boy, what a debut it was.
The new players combined for SEVEN points, including a one-goal, one-assist performance from Shew and a spectacular hat-trick outburst from Dee who scored, perhaps, one of the most bizarre tying goals in the history of the league that produced a 4-4 draw for his team versus Triple Bogey.
With under four minutes remaining in the game, QuaranTeam defenseman Arthur Wang led a rush down the right side of the ice and wisely chipped the puck deep into Triple Bogey's zone while fan-favourite Ashley Kim buzzed right through the defense and caused one of the many turnovers during the evening.
The puck eventually landed on Dee's stick, 15-feet in front of the goalie and his wrist shot deflected off one of Triple Bogey's players, hit the top part of the glass directly behind the goalie's net, astonishingly bounced on TOP of goalie Chester Yu's helmet before dropping right inside the net.
The devastating thud of the drop of the puck inside Triple Bogey's net was met with a chorus of cheers from QuaranTeam's bench as they slowly realized what had just occurred.
"What a completely whacky goal, you could never duplicate that goal if you tried a thousand times. But we were pressing hard near the end and I guess luck just went our way tonight", proclaimed Dee, whose hat-trick ranks as one of the most impressive debuts in team history.
After a quick start by Triple Bogey that saw their team go ahead 2-0 in the first period, they had a glorious opportunity to blow the game wide open when Kien Lee was called given a two-minute penalty for a questionable tripping call that gave Triple Bogey a 5 on 3 power play for over 90 seconds.
"What a bull@%# call by the referee, that player (Michael Thompson) fell so quick. He's like 100 pounds heavier than me!", said a clearly agitated Lee. "I don't want to say anymore, I'll leave it at that. I don't have money to pay fines in this league. It was a good game overall by both teams. I'm glad we were able to get a tie."
Not all was lost for Triple Bogey. Defenseman-turned-forward (via self-appointment), Anthony Chen, recorded a dazzling goal on a nifty deke close to the net off a powerplay opportunity that gave his team a 1-0 lead.
Chen ended his evening with three points and that's all the newspaper will be spending it's time writing about him.
With the tie, QuaranTeam remains the only undefeated team this season after three games. Honey Badgers Victorious in Their Debut 29 April 2019 | The Honey Badgers, entering HNX Beta as the fifth expansion team in league history, played their first game against powerhouse nWo last night, winning in dramatic fashion, 7-6, after a furious comeback attempt by nWo late in the third period.
Hyun Lee scored the franchise's first goal not even five minutes into the game and was met with a deafening silence from his teammates as many of them were unaware he had scored due to his very quiet and calm celebration after the goal.
"Even though that was his first goal of his career, he acted like he's been scoring his entire hockey career," said head coach Alex Woo after the game. "He didn't even put up his hands! None of us knew he scored."
Helen Chung recorded the franchise's first penalty when her stick accidentally caught between the legs of nWo forward, Alessandro Tarantelli, knocking him on the ice and immediately drawing the arm of head referee, Mr. McMahon.
"In hindsight, I probably made that call too fast. But when you're nWo, you're nWo 4 Life," explained Mr. McMahon.
"That was a terrible call, who was that blind ref?" asked a visibly frustrated Chung who salvaged the evening with her first career assist on the game-winning goal.
Richard Shim and Jessie Woo anchored a very strong defence corp making crisp clean passes throughout the game while setting up many of their teammates for scoring opportunities. Shim led all scorers with four points, including one of his three helpers on the game-winning goal.
After trailing 5-2 early in the third period, nWo stormed back with two quick goals by Sella Tray and Andrew Cooper that cut the lead to 5-4. The Honey Badgers restored a two-goal lead on Shim's breakaway goal on a brutal turnover by nWo's Christopher Ma but Julian Lai brought his team back to within a goal after one-timing a clean faceoff win by teammate Tarantelli deep in the Badgers zone. Jon Burns completed the comeback less than two minutes later after a rebound landed right to his stick where he was left all alone and snuck it between the pads of goalie Joshua Armstrong, tying the game 6-6.
But whatever euphoric moment that created for nWo quickly vanished as Honey Badgers forward Jeffrey Knight scored his second goal of the night off a beautiful pass from Shim that sealed the victory for the Badgers.

HNX Beta Playoffs 2019 Winter 27 March 2019 | Good morning Beta ''Noobs!
With the regular season coming to an end, we'll be heading into 3 weeks of playoffs. Degeneration-hnX is looking for a 3-peat so lets try to stop this from happening folks.
Roster Rules ****VERY IMPORTANT****:
Each player MUST be registered as a FULL-TIME player to qualify for playoffs unless approved by both respective team captains and league commissioner.
You can only request for subs IF your roster is under 10 skaters.
BUT if you request for subs, you must replace players of SIMILAR or LESS skill level and it needs to be approved by the opposing team and Commish.
if you are unsure whether the sub should be playing, consult with the Commish before the playoffs for further clarification.
Playoff Format:
March 29th and April 5th
each team will play the same opponent for 2 games
the matchups are 1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs. 3rd based on regular season standings
each team will receive 3 pts for a REGULATION TIME win, 1 pt for a TIE AND an additional point for a OVERTIME WIN (If required)
****THERE IS NO OVERTIME for the 1st game****
****THERE IS NO OVERTIME for the 1st game****
there MAY be OVERTIME in the 2nd game DEPENDING on the situation
the team that has the most points after 2 games (including OT if required) will advance to the Championship game.
OVERTIME Periods are 3 on 3 for 5 minutes STOP TIME.
At the end of OVERTIME (if required), there will be a SHOOTOUT of 3 skaters on each side to decide the outcome.
If there is still a TIE after 3 rounds, it will go into a SUDDEN DEATH SHOOTOUT and each team MUST go through the remaining players on their roster in the SUDDEN DEATH SHOOTOUT before the original 3 shooters can be used again
For example: Team A vs. Team B
Lets say Team A wins 3-1 in Game 1.
For Game 2, all Team A needs to do is get a TIE to advance to the Championship game. Team B MUST win the 2nd game in REGULATION TIME to extend the playoffs. IF Team B wins the 2nd game in regulation time (regardless of the score), there will be a 5 minute sudden death OT period. If nothing is decided in OT, we will go to the every unpopular yet exhilarating SHOOTOUT.
If you are unsure of this format, email us or call me and I will explain further.
April 12th: Championship Game & Consolation Game
OVERTIME Periods (IF REQUIRED) are 5 on 5 for 10 minutes STOP TIME.
At the end of OVERTIME, if required, there will be a shootout of 3 skaters on each side to decide the outcome.
Penalties and Suspensions:
as we introduced in PREVIOUS years in the playoffs, any 10-minute misconduct penalties will result in an automatic 1 game suspension which carries through to the playoffs. This is in addition to other penalties that may already carry suspensions on them.
if you are suspended for any reason, it will carry through during the playoffs AND if needed, the start of next season. Don't get suspended, it's not worth it and it costs you money.
Thank you and good luck everyone!

The Commissioner Records First Career Hat Trick in Stunning Fashion 13 August 2018 | It took well over 230 career regular season games and several more playoff games, but the unthinkable happened Sunday night - aging veteran defenceman Kien Lee scored the first hat-trick of his mediocre hockey career with less than one second remaining in regulation to help his team, The Flying Elbows, escape with a narrow 5-4 victory over Zero Pucks Given.
Lee's first two goals came off blistering slap shots from the point that veered past a screened netminder Bryan Beezer and help restore leads for his team in both occasions.
But it was the self-proclaimed "4th Forward's" dying seconds heroics that legends are born from, Hollywood scripts written for, and surely, many years from now will have quickly faded from the memories of most in attendance when he received a beautiful pass from William Chun and took advantage of a fallen skater to go in on a mini-breakaway and tucked in a backhander behind Beezer's glove.
When asked how he felt about scoring his first hat trick and, more importantly, helping his team defeat the powerhouse ZPG, Lee said,
"How the f#$& do I only have one hat trick?", and then stormed out of the change room.
